After the first compilation released in 2003, the
56Stuff team has decided to continue with the Different
Listening series and here’s the result. As with the first
album, the second part is an exciting collection of lounge and downtempo
tracks composed by artists from different corners of the ex-Soviet
republics. Although the artist selection is nearly identical to the
first compilation, the one undeniably noticeable feature is the improvement
in production and overall sound quality. Call it experience or coincidence,
but the progression is definitely there.
Zimmer-G opens the CD perfectly with light and careful melodies
supported by smooth tasty beats in Caravan. The next track
from 8bit is a slowed down 2-step experiment, which get you
in the mood to start moving. The following Braking Engine
from Few begins with trumpet driven funky jazz, but soon
picks up some electronic elements and speeds up into a great chase
scene soundtrack. Yadi suddenly brings in a wave of happiness
and cheers with a true Brazilian carnival piece. Arkhangelsk’s
COPY don’t disappoint either – their track on
the first Different Listening complation was also very good.
This time they put forward a nice atmospheric drum ‘n bass piece,
something that LTJ Bukem would definitely like. One of the best contributions
on this CD comes from Tapecut & Nemaier, who bring in
light electro-piano keys and peaceful rhythm, all embraced in heavenly
vocals - simply beautiful. Certainly, the collection wouldn’t
be complete without the Hammond-soaked little gem from Dima Vihornov,
filled with warmth and humour as usual. Concluding the compilation,
is a collaboration between Belarusian project Randomajestic
and Spanish singer Saskia, who transform acoustic guitar sounds accompanied
by a simple rhythm into a bleeping pop ballad.
It’s nice to see that the label and its artists have been working
hard and improving their skills. Hopefully this tendency will persist
and 56Stuff will continue introducing new artists who would
otherwise remain largely unknown. Different Listening 2 is
a great sequel to the first compilation, providing an excellent chance
to keep up to date with this small but lively label.
